LED Lamps

Most lamps use electric filaments for their light source but some use light emitting diodes. Also known as LED lamps, they are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. The voltage used with these lamps can vary from 12 volts to as much as 120 – 240 volts.

LED lamps run on lower voltage than traditional electric filament based lighting. An advantage of LED lighting is that they never need to be replaced.

In the 1970's LED lamps first gained widespread use as indicators in a variety of instruments. In these early days the output of LEDs were limited and could not be used for lighting.

The development of LEDs continued and in 1993 the blue LED was developed containing gallium nitride. By combining the light of separate LEDs – green, blue and red you get white light. This revolutionary product is what makes LED lamps possible.

While these bulbs cost more than an incandescent bulb they have a typical life span of 20 years.
